Traveller’s Tips

Passport/Visa Requirements
Passports are required by all British, American, Canadian and Australian nationals and they must be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival into Turkey. Nationals of Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Liechtenstein, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland can enter with a national ID card (which must have a validity of one year).Visas are not required by British, Australian, Canadian, USA, Irish, Austrian, Belguim, Italian, Maltese, Dutch, Portugese, Slovenian and Spanish nationals for stays not exceeding 3 months. British National Overseas passport holders should contact the visa section of the consulate general before travelling. But normally, they can purchase visas on arrival to any Turskish International Airport. Other nationals are advised to contact their embassy to check visa requirement.  All nationals must produce evidence of return/onward travel and evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of stay.

Currency and Banks

The national currency in Turkey is New Turkish Lira (YTL). Notes are in denominations of YTL100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and cash can usually be exchanged commission free in currency exchange offices, however banks usually charge commission. Traveller’s cheques can only be exchanged in banks with a passport. Travellers planning to exchange currency back before leaving Turkey, or making a major purchase which may need to be declared to customs, must retain transaction receipts to prove that the currency was legally exchanged.  Visa is the most popular Credit Card used, closely followed by MasterCard. American Express is accepted in top-flight hotels, restaurants and some gift shops. ATMs are widely found in most areas. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take traveller’s cheques in Pounds Sterling or US Dollars. Credit cards are far more convenient. Banking Hours are Mon-Fri 08.30-12.00 and 13.30-17.00. Some banks in tourist areas and large cities are open whole daily.

Skipper Qualifications

To charter a sailing yacht in Turkey it is necessary to have sailing certificates proving your competence. The Port Authorities in Turkey require at least an RYA Day Skipper with VHF qualifications as a sufficient license. International equivalents are also accepted from the majority of countries in Europe, as well as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa etc. Your original certificate should be taken with you and presented upon check in.
