Greece info
With so many islands, it is no wonder that Greece has always been extremely popular with sailors.
The Greek islands are very diverse and offer something for everyone – sailing and water sports, culture and festivals, fantastic outdoor meals by the sea, activities or simple relaxation.
The Ionian Island’s have been a popular haunt for Sailors for decades, and deservedly so. The Southern Ionian Islands of Lefkas, Ithaca and Kefalonia encircle what is almost and inland sea, with more than 20 smaller islands offering safe anchorages in bays surrounded by olive groves and pine trees. To the north is Corfu with it’s variety of Venetian and Greek architectural influences.
The Islands of the Saronic Gulf, to the southwest of Athens retain their distinct feel despite their close proximity to the capital. The area is land locked to the north so the waters of the gulf are protected from the prevailing northern winds in the summer. To the south lies the Peloponnese coast, away from the busier tourist areas.
The Cyclades are the Greek Islands of your dreams – blue shuttered, whitewashed houses climbing up step hillsides around tiny sheltered harbours. The large amounts of sunshine in the Sporades and the ‘meltemia’, the Aegean’s seasonal northern wind, attract many tourists in the summer.
The islands of Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Skyros are an idyllic paradise with a fantastic number of scenic bays and coves. These islands offer a fantastic combination of crystal clear water, sandy beaches, little seaside tavernas and rich nightlife for those who want it.
