2012 HPYF – Sicily, Aeolian Islands

    3rd November 2011:

We announced, a week ago, that next HPYF destination will be Sicily, sailing the Aeolian islands! Within a day, we had 10 boats booked. No wonder, we’ve had fantastic sailing week with HPYF and everyone is coming back again next year. We have decided to cap the numbers to 12, so for any of you who would like to join us in Sicily next year, please take a look at the selection on the HPYF website:

    http://highpointyachtfest.eu/page.asp?id=216

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

    All the best, Sasha

    29th September 2011:

Our sailing event, HPYF 2011, was once more a huge success! We repeated Sardina & Corsica again, this time with 9 boats. We sailed from Portisco, via Bonifacio, Budelli anchorage, La Maddalena town, La Tavolara, back to Portisco. A fantastic combination of beautiful towns and lovely anchorages.
We experienced 60 knts of wind while moored in Bonifacio, on our first night out! It was exciting. but a what a place for hiding. For the rest of the week we raced between the islands, we swam in the afternoons and we had the most fantastic gourmet dinner on Thursday night. 9 crews made a fantastic effort and prepared some of the most delicious meals for that evening. We all shared it, spread over two boats and Captain John’s team (US) won the ‘best dinner’ prize.
We had four races and the Dutch have won again! Quite convincingly so… Congratulations to Carolyn and her team for a fantastic performance!

    October 2010:

A RETURN TO SARDINIA & CORSICA IN 2011

We sailed from/to Portisco in September 2010 with HPYF. In 2011 we will plan a route with similar distances and it will
certainly include an overnight stop in Bonifacio and one or more in the La Maddalena archipalego. One or two nights in anchorages will be
arranged subject to weather conditions. There is so much to explore in this area and never enough time…!
The usual format of mixing the sailing races with swimming, socialising, cooking and partying will be retained.

We had such a great week exploring this wonderful area in 2010, that we decided to return in 2011 and plan a different route to pick up the best of the places we didn’t have time to visit in 2010. We will start and finish in Portisco and include Bonifacio and new areas of La Maddalena in the itinerary.

Booking is on a first-come-first-served basis so please contact us with your preferences as soon as you can. As the fleet is fairly small, we have decided not to book any meals ahead (apart from Welcome and Prize giving evenings) but will have a list of suggestions readyin advance with the itinerary. The Welcome party will be organized by the 2010 winners, the

Dutch team led by our first ever Comodoress, Carolyn. If the party is organized in the marina, independently, we may require some funds per person in advance. The Prize giving will be booked in one of the restaurants. For those of you that are skippers without crews or crews without skippers please contact us and we will do our best to help with forming a crew for you. I look forward to hearing from you soon and to sailing Sardinia and Corsica together next September!
All the best, Sasha, John, Mandy and Dave

This time, ECC will take place in Turkey, 07/05/11 – 14/05/11 on the route Orhanye – Marmaris. We expect to have approximately 65 boats and around 450 participants. What we recommend in Istanbul

istanbulThe Bosphorus fish restaurants are highly recommended by most guidebooks, but Barba Giritli (Abdulezzel Pasa Cad 3, Tel: 00 90 212 533 1866), on the more industrial Golden Horn, is one of the best restaurants in this area of Istanbul with fantastic views of the old city. Highly recommended dish is marinated grilled octopus. Rustem Pasha Mosque, near the Spice Market, is a hidden Ottoman treasure, with beautiful 16th-century Iznik tiles. In the Grand Bazaar, eat as locals do at Arslan (Vezirhan Cad 70; 00 90 212 513 7610) as you will be among shopkeepers who demand a quality lunch. Nearby is Caferaga Medresesi, a 16th-century school on Sogukcesme Sok, now a coffee shop. It makes perfect break from sightseeing.

After the start at 10 a.m. from Apostol Island, the speed of the winds reached about 40 kilometers per hour. The waves were around four meters high which considerably slowed down the gulets.
After six nautical miles of sailing, 14 gulets had to withdraw. Some gulets returned to Gündoğan Bay, while the other gulets were given a permission to put the sails down and advance to the finishing line in Didim by engines.
Despite the weather conditions, this stage had a great audience from the shores.
The Bodrum Cup promotes the world-famous Bodrum gulets. The gulets traditionally date back three thousand years ago.
The Bodrum Cup was first organized in 1989. This gulet sailing event was launched with the aim of encouraging sailing activity during yacht charters and helping charter crews develop their sailing skills and interests. The cup race has been held on the beautiful “blue voyage” courses which the charters use during summers to impress their clients, such as Datça, Ekincik, Gökova Bay, Güllük and Mandalya Bay.

    Sailing in Croatia and Montenegro

2009 has brought closer together two fantastic Adriatic coastlines – Croatia and Montenegro. Both are magnificent, dramatic, rich in history and offer a number of beautiful old towns, islands and bays, great for sailing, sightseeing, swimming. For a week charter, we suggest starting in Dubrovnik, sailing the Elafiti archipelago, sailing to Cavtat and then crossing to Montenegro to visit the Bay of Kotor (towns of Perast and Kotor are a must!), Budva and Sv Stefan before returning the boat to Dubrovnik. This can be easily organized with a bareboat charter as well as a crewed charter. The alternative option is to sail Croatia for a week, then hire a car to Montenegro which will allow you to explore the inland of the country that is incredibly beautiful. If you decide for this option, we highly recommend staying in Dobrota (between Perast and Kotor). Palazzo Radomiri, once lovely stone Captain’s residence has been turned into a great boutique hotel. The scenery of the bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska) is stunning. For the ones who prefer the luxury of the Aman Resorts we recommend staying in the Villa Milocer.

High Point YachtFest 2010 – Which destination?!

We have already started thinking about the 2010 destination for www.highpointyachtfest.eu . It has to be in the Mediterranean, but while the fleet is small we need to use that to visit smaller places where bigger fleet can not fit. Three top destinations for this sailing event (to take place in October 2010) are: Sardinia and Corsica, Elba, south/west coast of Italy, from Salerno. We would not exclude Greece either. So the question is, where can one still expect some nice and warm weather in October but also have some good winds. We shall be looking into interesting places as many like meeting different cultures and tasting different cuisine. We shall be sailing again for a week, from port to port (or anchorage). This event, although competitive, is ideal for any kind of experience, so the beginners are very welcome!

    Regatta in Croatia, October 2009

We have just returned from our www.highpointyachtfest.eu sailing regatta in Croatia and realized, once again, that sailing, socializing and networking go incredibly well together. We were so lucky with the beautiful weather too bearing in mind that we are in October. We took over the sailing boats in Kastela, nr Split. We had sailing yachts Elan 434 and Elan 384 in the fleet. We then sailed to Trogir for the Welcome Party. Trogir is one of the best preserved towns in Dalmatia and one of the most beautiful ones too. The old town centre is well worth visiting and is a perfect host for these kinds of sailing events as well as for the private charter. The ACI Marina is positioned right across the waterfront of the old town. One can not wish for a more lovely view. On Sunday we started our regatta and sailed from Trogir, via the island of Solta to the Lucice anchorage. On Monday, we sailed from Lucice to Hvar. On Tuesday we sailed from Hvar to Palmizana, the Pakleni archipelago. On Wednesday we sailed from Palmizana to Vis. On Thursday we sailed from Vis to Maslinica (island Solta). On Friday we sailed from Maslinica to Trogir for our Prize Giving dinner in the old town centre. On Saturday morning we returned the boats in the Kastela marina.
We swam, we dined very well, mostly in the local restaurants that we pre booked for our crews. We sailed in the afternoons as that is when we had the most of the winds.
The Central Dalmatia is a fantastic area for a sailing holiday, a regatta or any kind of sailing event. The choice of sailing boats is very good and there are plenty of marinas, anchorages and lovely ports that give a number of options for different routes.

    ‘SAIL 2010’ in Holland!

Luxury charter yacht – Sail Venice – Split – Dubrovnik

A couple of luxury gulets have developed this fantastic route from Venice, via Split to Dubrovnik. It will have to be a two-week journey and we highly recommend it. A number of our clients, particularly the ones who arrive from far away will use this opportunity to spend some time in Italy, few nights in Venice and board the gulet in the Venice port. These luxury gulets are ideal for larger groups of eight to fourteen guests. They have great crews who provide an excellent service. The Gulet will take them along the Adriatic coast, via Istrian peninsula, Kornati Archipelago to Central and Southern Dalamtia. The gulets have superb chefs and the guests will be spoiled with the choice of food. Early enquiry for these luxury gulets is highly recommended. Please see the recommended gulets:

Gulets in Croatia / Crewed charter in Croatia

Crewed charter in CroatiaGulets represent a perfect way of spending some time on the sea in great comfort and with an excellent service. This is also the best way of exploring Croatian Adriatic. Gulets in Croatia are often Turkish yachts, fully refurbished and adapted to Croatian standards. But some are newly built. The itineraries are tailor-made to clients’ specification and all the details are taken care of. We often suggest doing a one-way route Split/Trogir – Dubrovnik or the other way around.

    Sailing in Turkey

Sailing in TurkeyThe bay of Fethiye, is in our opinion, the most beautiful sailing area in Turkey. Green mountains reach the height of 2000meters. Incredible scenery. Numerous little bays, perfectly placed for sailing yachts normally offer a restaurant and safe mooring. There are endless possibilities for a week itinerary only within the bay of Fethiye. The town of Fethiye is famous for its great fish market. We higly recommend dining there.

Sailing in Bodrum is always challenging as there the wind conditions are almost always perfect for sailing. We recommend starting in Bodrum, crossing over to Kos and sailing further around the Bodrum peninsula, visiting places like Gumusluk, Yalikavak and Iasos.

    Sailing in Croatia

Sailing in CroatiaFor those who are looking for more off-the-beaten-track type of Sailing in Croatia, I suggest starting from Dubrovnik and covering the Elafiti islands, Mljet, Lastovo and Korcula. The route can be adapted for longer or shorter sailing legs and it offers a fantastic combination of numerous little bays and few lovely ports. Kornati islands offer the same kind of feel. Not too busy and not too lively. More for the sailors who are looking for peaceful time. Read the rest of this entry »
